Why is C5 ignoring my single page override?

Following the advice given in this forum post:http://www.concrete5.org/community/forums/themes/customizing-login-... I created a custom login page at
however, this page is ignored in favour of
if I remove the latter, C5 gives a fatal error because it can't find that page.
What do I need to do to make my override in /single_pages work?
/single_pages/login.php
