Is "Exclude from sitemap.xml" not recursive?

I have a huge folder structure that should be hidden for the moment. I can hide it from the menu easily - but when I check "Exclude from sitemap.xml", all the sub-folders and pages remain visible in the sitemap.xml!
Surely this can't be right? Do I seriously have to activate the checkbox for *every* page in the structure?

It's probably quicker to manually edit your sitemap.xml.
If you go into the Page Search you should be able to do an "Advanced Search" using the Parent Page and Search All Children, then check all the boxes and from the "Items Selected" dropdown do Edit Properties and edit that attribute for all your pages at once.
