Working from a Blank Canvas in Concrete

I spent some time going through all of the currently available Themes trying to find one that would work for a client of mine and really didn't find something.... So I am thinking of working with a "blank canvas" but still within Concrete... Is this possible?

Is there a specific Theme that supports this? Is the best blank canvas simply the Empty Site created when installing Concrete on a domain?

Any guidance would be appreciated... Thanks... tga

Type 'blank' into the marketplace theme search, pick one and go for it!

Thanks man.... I actually did see a couple of these... The key is that I'm designing a website, not trying to develop a Theme per say... But I will certainly look through them a little deeper... This project is a tad challenging in trying to provide the "look" that is desired when not being able to find a full robust Theme that provides a lot of it already... :-|

Appreciate it!

Concrete includes 3 themes by default, which are ideal as a blank template.

Whenever I start a new project for a client, I always use the "Empty Site" option, since it seems easiest to do my own custom stuff that way.

There are plenty of free "framework" themes, which are intended to be a starting point for designers and developers. If you go to my profile, you will see that I have a couple free themes you can play with. My "FlexCRETE" theme is an ideal starting point if you're looking to build a responsive site.

Thanks!! I will definitely check things out... This particular project is rather challenging... and I like challenges. Just still rather new to all this and was hoping to find an existing theme that provides some of the functionality and styling that is requested.

One element that I'm trying to find an add-on for is the top menu/header treatment found on this website: http://www.hero-zine.com

Any leads appreciated... ;-)

The menu is done with jQuery and the same can be done with a custom autonav template.

Can anyone guide me to a good Add On for the jQuery work that I need to do?

Thanks... tga

There is no add-on that I know of. jQuery is loaded automatically so you can use jQuery functions. Perhaps this series of videos might help:

Disregard any instructions to download and install jQuery because C5 already does that automatically. If you call it again on your page, you will have 2 copies of jQuery running which is a no-no.

So if anyone has ever worked from a "blank canvas" using one of the available Concrete themes, which was the best choice from the five themes available?

Inquiring minds want to know... tga

I don't like any of them. They all have issues. I like the way Mkras built the free Boldy theme. Very consistent and built to the c5 standard architecture.

For a REALLY blank canvas, I like this:

Thanks MHawke..!!

I keep asking questions as I am a huge novice at this... so how does one get this into Concrete environment? Which download is the appropriate one to use?

So... now that you know what it's going to require to start with a real 'blank canvas', I think you should download a free theme from growthcurve called 'Lucky Stars' and start making changes to the fonts, backgrounds, etc. to suit your needs. His theme is based on skeleton but it has already been concrete5-ized. This will be much faster and less frustrating for a person new to C5.

Thanks man!! Really appreciate the guidance... this client and I have come up with a really cool website through mockups but the challenge is to make it come to life... but I know it can be done with the right foundation, add-ons, jqueries, etc.... ;-)

So thanks again! tga

From my experience with clients, there is a fine line between working within my limitations (profitable) and promising beyond my limitations (never profitable). I tend to push my limits only with clients who aren't in a hurry because it's never as easy as you think it's going to be.

Don't get me wrong... it's a nice design but nothing too crazy... Just a couple elements here and there that will need jQuery for a sliding header/menu element and mouse-over effects that should be easily doable with the Concrete basic elements...

Or are you saying that I'm a bit disillusioned? LOL

I would never try to dissuade you from taking on a challenge. After all, the fun is in the curves not the straightaways. All I'm saying is that challenging projects are rarely as profitable because the client has no idea what time is involved in bringing their vision to life. It is my opinion that developers, like all businesses, are successful in the long run by under-promising and over-delivering.

I hear ya man... Trust me I do... Good thing is that I've always had a full-time job like probably most of us... this client stuff is just fun side distractions that brings in a little extra $$$ while expanding my knowledge... So for me it's a win win!!

But I am definitely taking your comments to heart and considering enlightening this client to consider sliding the month end January target date a little... ;-)
