XML sitemap doesn't respect sub-items in folders set to "hide from sitemap"

I have a large web site with multiple languages. Two languages went live today, others aren't ready for production yet. Obviously, those language folders shouldn't show up in the XML sitemap.
When setting "hide from sitemap" on the folders, the sitemap plugin hides that one folder, but it still lists all the pages beneath that folder. So to hide an invisible language folder from the XML sitemap, one would have to check "hide from sitemap" for every page of every language folder one wants to hide.
That can't be how it's supposed to work, can it?
Perhaps the Internationalization plugin's "sitemap" module deals with this differently. However, that module crashes on me so I can currently only use the default one.
