5.4 file manager problem

After upgrading to 5.4 (from 5.3.3.1) the file manager is unusable. The throbber loading image appears indefinitely and click on any of the images or search functions reloads the page without any css/functionality. I've tried reloading/disabling the cache without luck. The same issue is occuring with the index search engine job - loading indefinitely. Both have been running for 30 min +.
