5.7: install .zip or unzipped folder -access forbidden

I have been reading about installing 5.7 as I have a problem. My installation was blocked by: "Forbidden. You do not have permission to access this document."

The instructions about installation and several posts on this forum mention you should star with complete clean folders (I did) and then unzip the files on the server. But the latter doesn't work for me: I only have ftp access and I cannot find a way to do that.

I also cannot imagine that would make any difference, compared to uploading the unzipped folder?? I mean, unzipping is nothing more than what is says, right, it doesn't change the files somehow for the present location??!

But if it is the same, why then do I end up with the message above?

My web host used to have 1-click install, which was great, but it has not been working properly for a while now. So I am forced to do a manual install.

So, two questions: (1) do you really need to upload the .zip file and unzip on the server, and (2) if the zip/unzip thing doesn't cause problems, what could the cause of my problem be?
