Access denied after I enabled pretty URL

Hello,
I´m hosting on a shared server. Since I enabled Pretty URL I just get a page which says "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /.... on this server." Is there a way to disable pretty URL without the concrete interface?
thx

Have you updated your .htaccess file as instructed when enabling Pretty URLs?

You can disable pretty url's through the database if you have access via phpmyadmin

There's tons of information via a forums search on pretty URL's but you should be able to get them to work on shared hosting.

Hmmm.....I have the same issue on cheap-ass alfahosting.com (grrrr). As soon as I switch on pretty URL's I get

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

But then, if I switch off the rewrite engine in the .htaccess file like so

RewriteEngine Off

the pretty URL's don't work.... alfahostings customer care is quite useless so I basically need to know what exactly to tell them :-/
