Advice needed: Migrating to New host AND upgrading

I have a C5 site that's v 5.6.2.1. I'm moving it to new site hosting that uses a temporary domain name so we can keep the existing site live. Of course it should end up using v8 and I'll be using a new theme and making changes before switching and taking the new hosted version live.

What advice can you give me about workflow on doing this?

- Should I install the latest version of C5 on the new host, install the new theme, then import the data from the existing site?

- Or is it better to try to migrate the C5 installation as is and THEN upgrade to v8 and add the new theme?

Any good advice and tutorials if they exist will be greatly appreciated!

THANKS

Unfortunately there is no upgrade path, so your option 2 isn't really possible. You will have to create a new 5.8 install with a new theme and either manually migrate the content or use the migration tools (which have some bugs) to move the content.

Here is a link to the post about the migration tool -

Thanks for the quick reply.

As I understand it, the big change is in upgrading to 5.7, true?

That said, what makes more sense, Installing v8 and trying to migrate the content

or

Install 5.7, migrate the content, then upgrade to 5.8

Is one version a better, safer bet than the other?

(So you know, I created the original C5 site but I have to say it was my only C5 project. I'm more HTML and now lots of WordPress)

THANKS

I personally would install 5.8 right out of the box, migrating to either one will be the same, so why migrate then upgrade.

THANKS!

I didn't know if it would matter or the migration tool worked better for one or the other.

Thanks for the advice and pointing me in the right direction. I'll shout if I run into problems.

Appreciate it!
