Another Pretty URL problem: works on one site, not another

I have two development sites on the same server. On one, the pretty URLs work just as they're supposed to. On the other, with the same exact settings, instead of "site/faqs/" I get "site/index.php?cID=79" and so forth. Can this be a problem with the server configuration if one site is working? And if not...what's wrong?

If you are certain that the files are the same you have your .htaccess and have friendly urls checked in the dashboard. Then I would suspect virtual hosts configuration for that site on the server is probably not configured to allow overrides.

Are you on a shared server or dedicated/vps?
