Are openssl & mbstring essential?

A host we are considering doesn't support openssl or mbstring, would someone please be able to explain what the purposes of these are and as they are recommended in thehttp://www.concrete5.org/documentation/background/system_requiremen... what problems could they potentially create not having them?

Hi its actually only OpenSSL that we don't have now, any idea if its essential? Thanks in advance.
