Basic caching slows site down

I have a fresh C5 install (latest version, 4 days old) on shared PHP 5.2 hosting that has been performing very decently so far (all major PHP web apps run fine). No opcode caching.
With all caching inside C5 deactivated, a page takes between 600ms and 1000ms to load. (That's too much but I'll be worrying about that later.)
However, activating "basic caching" measurably increases loading times to 2000-3000ms. Should I file this as a bug? What information should I include?

There is a new version of Concrete coming out this week (5.6.1) that fixes a lot of cache issues and will make your site much faster.
Cool, thanks guys! I had been under the impression the version promising the massive speedup had already come out. I'll be updating once it's stable.
I've just the same problem, also on a shared hosting.
Without "basic cache" my site is much faster! Can't wait for the update :)

and if you can't wait the 5.6.1b4 version is worth trying - it really does fly!
