C5 times out when connecting to DB

One of my sites which has been running happily on C5 for several years is now taking forever to load.
My host did some checking and told me the CMS is taking too long to connect to the Db and timing out.
Anyone know why that would be and how to fix it?

I don't think that is a c5 problem,your host is either blocking c5 or throttling the connection, try clearing your site cache just incase.

yes I already tried clearing the cache and all the speed tips mentioned in another post, none of them made any difference.
In the end I upgraded C5 and that seems to have fixed the problem.
Strange.
