Can't sign into dashboard

I just upgraded a client site to the most recent version on C5; now when I submit my login info, I'm directed back to the home page without a toolbar and the URL is just as thought I'm visiting the page.
I don't know what to do, I found one other article with my same predicament but no solution.
Normally I'm very hesitant in upgrading like this, but I was not able to access the site map; and with a similar problem with another client site, upgrading fixed everything. And for some reason, my host doesn't seem to be able to run older versions of C5 very well.
Please help.

I dont quite get your logic, are you comparing like with like, is the other site on the same server?
Personally I would suggest testing the site say on another host or say wampserver.
If it works just fine on there, I would concentrate on the perfomance of you hosts server and perhaps consider moving???

I'm able to login now.
But I still have problems trying to load my site map (which was my reason for upgrading, trying to fix that). So I guess I'll search the forum again and possibly post somewhere.
