Change file storage location

I need to have one file storage location among several sites with all the file managers seeing and saving to the same directory.

It's not very clear to me in the documentation how to achieve this.

Has anyone done this?

I haven't actually done this with a concrete site. Ignore if appropriate. This sounds like somewhere you might use symlinks if you are using Apache:
