Confirmation link not sent when user registers

We've recently upgrade to 5.6.1.2 and have just found out that users are not being sent a confirmation link to the email address that they've specified in the registration form. I've checked in system & settings > login & registration > public registration and under 'Allow visitors to signup as site members?' we have the 'On - email validation' option selected, which SHOULD send a confirmation email correct? Has anyone else had issues with this and know of a fix? Thanks.
Every e-mail that concrete5 sends is logged there, even if it couldn't be delivered.
This information would at least tell you if concrete5 actually tried to send something. If it did, it's probably a problem with SMTP, if it didn't it's something in concrete5...
