Error on update

When I try to update using the Dashboard to
Version: 5.4.2.2. Release Date: October 06, 2011
I get the error message
The directory /kunden/homepages/45/d407975461/htdocs/app407975476/updates must be writable by the web server.
I'm using 1&1 for hosting
Any help gratefully received
