file manager went missing

I'm a newbie. Just upgraded to 5.6.2.1 and changed to php 5.4. The file manager has gone missing. What do I need to do to fix this?

what do you mean when you say gone?
all of its contents or it has been removed from the dashboard? or something else entirely?

the contents are there but the contents don't show up on certain pages though permissions have been reset. the only way to get to the file manager is through 'search'. any ideas?
