File not found

I would appreciate help regarding a file not found error.
I downloaded an existing site onto my mac, using MAMP to host.
Homepage found fine, but links to internal files gives a file not found error.
Not using any BASE_URL or DIR_REL in site.php file.
Any suggestions appreciated... Mark
