Google Analytics installation

I have been told this is simply pasted into the sitewide settings (tracking). Elsewhere I have read that I need to paste into the default.php.

where should the script go?

Entering in the dashboard works works perfectly well. Just make sure you leave the line <?php Loader::element('footer_required'); ?> in your theme's footer as that includes it.
