Having JavaScript issues? Add-on conflicts?

I am new to C5 and having some SERIOUS problems. I have tried several other requests and searches for help with no avail. I hope someone here can help me out?
PROBLEMS:
1) Putting the site in "maintenance mode" sends me (the admin) to the "sorry the page is in maintenance mode" and i am not able to work on the site in that mode.
2) While editing and building, the site eventually gets "really" slow to load then returns a "500 internal server error" . I have to close the browser and wait a few minutes then i can log on again. (There are only a few users- maybe 4 on at a time so far) who also get the same.
3) I have Pretty URLs enable, but they don't show up "pretty" in the browser.
4) I added Reg Pro for certain pages off the main Registration page for a different user group, but it will not "remember" some of the settings. They have change to something else when i double check.
5) I added ADVANCED FORMS but could not get it to work properly- it was not dispalying correctly, following "RULES", etc. it was sending ALL of my site registrations to the "form notification email" address! (not sure if that is related- removed the add-on, and still discovered that the system is continuing to send site registrations to the old "form notification email" address!! Even AFTER CLEARING THE CACHE.
6) Don't know if this is a clue to anything, but i also have Enlil LIKES THIS app and it will not reflect a "i like it" click until after the page reloads.
From Cpanel:
a) I did find an .htaccess file in the Root folder, so i renamed it and then deleted the old one.
b) I checked all of the ROOT folders and found none with 0777 or 0666. other than 0755 and 0644 there were some with 0700, 0755 and 0646. (but i think that is ok?)
c) Error log from Cpanel is not displaying ANY error logs even though i know there are.
**Also, please note that i started noticing SOHO Admin front end database access problems back in november with hostpapa (our host) upgraded. (I can not edit pages or add new uses, etc from the site). some of my softaculous folders got moved around, some of my programs got put into some kind of "deactived scripts" category that wasn't there before. SOHO admin thinks my soho site may have been hacked. hp has never replied about that question.
So, I got C5 installed for a "fresh start" and plan to take down the old site, hoping that would resolve the problem. HP says "everything is fine" and that it is 3rd party program issues. 3rd parties report back it's not an issue.
I have NO IDEA what / where to check or change.... I am not knowledgeable about codes and html, php, etc. so i depend on "following instructions" to get around bugs and glitches. (can not afford to pay someone to "fix" settings...
How do I set up my Cpanel settings properly.... (I do not have "shell" (?) access...
wow.... that's all i can think of at the moment (pritty tired) - i am hoping this is all just a simple setting problem of some kind that an experienced person will recognized and be able to offer some recommendations to try?
