Installation problem with permissions on Nearlyfreespeech

I successfully uploaded the zip file and unzipped it on the server. When it ran a test for requirements, it said that the necessary files were not writeable. I made the files writeable using two methods: I used Filezilla to set the file privileges to 755 and I logged in via ssh and used chmod -R 755. When I rechecked, It says it is still not writeable. Please help.
