just installed 5.7.3.1; get "unexpected error" trying to login

I'm evaluating concrete5 and have installed it via softaculous. Everything appeared to go okay but when I try to login I get a "failed to create cache" error. Subsequent attempts result in a "unexpected error".

I'm work in that hardware/embedded world and am not that familiar with what could be going wrong. Any ideas?

It sounds like there could be a permissions issue on the 'public_html/application/files' folder. It should be set to 755 recursively so that the cache folder (which is inside the 'files' folder) is writeable. The Softaculous script might have been unable to set the permissions properly. You can check/set this through your cPanel->File Manager or via FTP with FIlezilla.

Thanks for the suggestion; everything is set to 755. Could this be a path problem? I've installed concrete5 under a parked domain:
public_html/stearmanpress.com/concrete

The files are under:
public_html/stearmanpress.com/application/files
