Login/Dashboard does not work

Hi,
All of a sudden, the login to the dashboard does not work. I can access the login page, and use my user/pass, but it forwards me back to the index, and does not have the editing bar at the top. Below the site, there are the following warnings:
Warning: Unknown: open(/var/php_sessions/sess_d602f5dfff3aab1bb77e3c672bbbc691, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in Unknown on line 0
Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/php_sessions) in Unknown on line 0
Site has been working fine for months! please advise! thanks for the help.
