Lost content and password during migration.

Here is the situation. I created a c5 install on my shared hosting service and created a team and content for it. After the client was pleased with the site I was to move it to the dedicated service hosting.
First I exported the database from mySQL.
Then I created a new install on the new server, got everything configured. I dropped all the tables and uploaded the database from the other install.
All pages came up fine except for the home page and my login password will not work - from either install.
I've tried the email new password and nothing happens. Does the password have anything to do with the "SALT" line in the config? Also why did the home page content not come up? Is it stored locally?
