Migration Strategies

Hi there,

I was hoping to start a discussion on migration strategies. I am in the planning stages of a web site migration. I have over 500 pages in a Windows server based CMS and need to migrate them over.

The theme is currently in development, but I want to have a plan of attack for migrating content once the themes are finished. I will likely not be transferring over any image assets, just straight text content.

How have you moved your content into C5? Did you learn any tips and tricks along the way? I'm thinking the easiest approach (also the longest) is going to be doing a manual copy/paste, but I'd be open to other options that might expedite the process. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Had to do the exact same thing a couple of times. Although laborious, cut and paste was the best way to go.

I made sure I had a complete mirrored version on my local hard drive of the live site.

Took a while, but I had control and the end result was worth the effort.

Although it's not a strategy to automatically migrate content, one fantastic tool to use in this kind of scenario is this:

So even if you need to resort to cutting and pasting content, you can create your pages very quickly.

Have you used this add-on in a migration? If so could you expand a little on how you used it? Thanks!

We've used this add-on quite a few time when we are rebuilding sites in concrete5. We use in particular when we're building school websites. Most often we're replacing an existing site, but the school wants to keep the site structure and content fairly similar.

It's simply a way to quickly create new pages all in one go. It's not going to do anything with content, but it can make fleshing out your sitemap much easier.

You go to this add-on in the dashboard and simply type/paste in your list of page names for a particular level. After hitting go few seconds later all those pages are created and ready to edit. You could create, say, 20 pages all in one hit, in one particular part of your site. It's worthy of being in the core.

Thanks for the information! I can certainly see the value in using that to quickly create large chunks of pages and save some time. I've been researching possible methods for working with content, but have not yet found anything terribly helpful. I'm not necessarily against a manual method, but I always look for ways to simplify processes where possible. Thanks again for the info!
