Mysql error on installation?

I've just uploaded the latest vers of concrete5 to my new VPS...
Everything was installed properly (I think!) - php / mysql / apache etc
However I'm getting the following error when I go to the directory (ready for install)
Mysql Indicator = Red
Function mysql_connect() not found. Your system does not appear to have MySQL available within PHP.
Anyone ever come across this?
