Updates are accomplished through your site dashboard...

Depending on the version you are upgrading from, you may need to upload the updated site files to your server.

What is the version of your current installation?

I recommend updating manually for any version.

I've been using the dashboard update since 5.4 and have had any problems... Why do you recommend a manual update?

1. Sh!t bunch of extra files,
2. Larger chance of corruption
3. more likely to break something
4. its messy

i can probably think up more

But... not using the /updates directory, isn't harder to roll back to the previous version if the update breaks something?

What do you do about the downtime?

yea, not using the /updates directory,

downtime is less than a minute, i make sql backups
and if i need to restore, i just upload the old directory.

Right... I guess I could tar the old stuff up before I uploaded the new...

I'll follow your advice. Thanks.

Not sure if this is going to help J, though?

Advice in detail would be awesome.

Whoa.

Frankly, I'm afraid to offer any help... The first version of Concrete I ever saw was 5.something or other.

I suggest re-posting to the installation forum in the hopes of getting the attention of one of the old timers. Be sure to put 3.3.1 into the subject.

Best of luck to you...

The upgrade process is here:
http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/installation/upgrading_concr...

It sounds like 5.3.3.1 to 5.4.1.1 will require an intermediate version so upgrade like so :
5.3.3.1->5.4.0.5->5.4.1.1 (Thanks, Mnkras)

You can find version 5.4.0.5 here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/concretecms/files/concrete5/...

It's probably a good idea to:
-turn off pretty urls

It's essential that you:

-backup your 5.3.3.1 /concrete folder
-backup your database

If something goes wrong you can restore these two to get back to where you were.

But really... This isn't that complicated. After backing up, replace the existing /concrete directory with the upgrade /concrete directory, hit the url in the instructions and you should be fine.

Are you familiar with ftp? phpMyAdmin?

You will need to download an ftp client. FileZilla is a good one and it's free. You will also need to know the ftp login credentials for your webhost. You will also need to backup your database. I'm not sure if you can get this done through the Concrete dashboard with this version or not. If not, you will need access to your site host's MySQL server, which is usually accomplished through phpMyAdmin. It's pr

But... If you're unfamiliar with ftp or you don't understand the Concrete directories and how they work, or are intimidated with the database backup thing, it might just be best to hire someone for $50 or whatever to do this for you.

It's not that complicated, but...
