New user getting started help (added error_log and index.php (renamed with .txt externsion)

Hello:

I am trying to rebuild a website and installed Concrete 5.7.2 through the Softaculous scripts feature in CPanel provided by my hosting company.

I see an installation with database, etc., but when I attempt to access that folder it's completely empty...I see no editing features.

If I attempt to access the admin feature, from the hypertext link within the Cpanel Softaculous Installs summary, I get a login panel, then a blank page again.

If I click on the Admin icon, I get a file size error. It's possible whatever I did to get that error wasn't a valid action, as it's happened three times on three installs. That is the only error experienced other than a seemingly empty installation.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, tried Chrome as well as Firefox (PC running Ubuntu Studio 14.04 LTS).

Tonight I began exploring this site. I configured my profile to the extent I could and added I think a theme and some add-ons, on the theory that there needs to be some kind of viable content installed in the conc directory, other than the package itself.

Downloading of the theme and add-ons was done on the basis of no site being linked here. (Only action other than 'do it later').

Some of this doesn't mean alot to me, so I just tried things.

I read the manual install info so I might understand what I am attempting to find. The folders that are supposed to have world write capability were not all readily visible in my FTP folder...I had to dig pretty deep to find a couple of those folders, making me think the manual install instrux were for an older version. They were set to 755, despite it being an automated installation - I would assume a menu-driven installation would be ready to edit, but I did change settings to 777 on the files, config, packages and updates folders, once I found them (didn't seem to advance my progress).

That about catches you up on my attempts to get something going.

In case I am totally in the wrong place for the wrong reason, I got the impression Concrete as a CMS would allow me to do some kind of relatively easy manipulation of website features. At this point I don't care too much what I accomplish...just get the system up & running. Once I can do that, I can change things or delete/reinstall.

The previous CMS installs I attempted I could not even understand the processes for, and was not PHP literate, so I moved on until I found a simpler CMS to try. Concrete seemed pretty simple...if I can set it up properly to be viewable and editable.

My hosting package is on a Linux-based server and I think PHP is 5.x. A previous Softaculous installation needed PHP 4.x to be updated to 5.x, and that was accomplished successfully.

I can see Concrete content either through the CPanel admin access or FTP, but I don't think saying so is anything more significant than what is stated above.

One more big assumption I am making is that my goal is to create a website either inside the conc folder on my server, or wherever it drives me to, and that it will be independent of other types of 'script' installs on the server. I had started a Wordpress install myself, had a completely separate Wordpress website started under contract with a consultant but ended that project due to a change of plans.

The only problem I have ever had with my hosting with regard to installing, exercising and uninstalling packages through CPanel was the need to upgrade PHP once.

Based on this, I assume it's all 'operator error' - that I am not yet able to establish proper setup (as I said above, the how-to instructions seem to out of sync with the version downloaded (I don't see any mention of 5.7.2, just older things like 5.6.x).

I have successfully installed and removed photo gallery type packages but need to evolve to something like a CMS-driven installation and integrate a gallery and other features (TBD) into the website.

Thanks for reading...I figure more details are better than less, but sometimes readers do not agree with me ;O).

Hopefully this shows I'm a little out of my league regarding knowing what I'm doing and how, but also that I am able to understand and figure out some CPanel functions.
