no edit or other bars when Visiting a page

I upgraded yesterday and everything looks great, except there is no Edit button or anything else when I visit a page to edit. What am I missing here? Is there some permission I need to change in order to see the Edit bar?
Have you tried switching themes temporarily to the C5 plain yogurt default to see if its a problem with your theme? Also, are your add-ons updated as well?
I got very impatient and removed the update. Now the site is looking for the start-up code. I'm trying to get my web host to apply the latest backup restoration, the one previous to the C5 update. Dumb idea to play with things I know nothing about!!!
