Page/block editing controlls not working

I have a problem with a new install of C5 I'm hoping to get some help with... this is is brand-new install of c5, ver 5.4.2.2, installed on a "WIMP" stack (Windows, IIS7.5 - I know, not officially supported, but LAMP is not an option in this case, and I really hope not to have to choose another CMS).

C5 installed with no errors.

Pages load and look fine.

I can log in with no problems.

Problems start when I put the page in Edit Mode. Instead of seeing the [Exit Edit Mode] button that replaces the [Edit Page] button when you take a page into Edit Mode, I see the [Edit Page] button just get greyed-out. There is no way to exit Edit Mode normally.

When I first load the page in edit mode, a notice appears that says, "admin is currently editing this page." (I am logged in as admin.) Could it be the system is just failing to recognize who I am?

The content blocks show the red dotted lines around them, but when you hover your mouse over them, they do not turn highlighted. When you click on them, no pop-up menu appears.

The controls to add a page work fine. I can add a page, but when I do, it tells me "admin is currently editing this page."

In the dashboard, everything seems to work okay there, including the pop-ups in the site map.

The behavior is the same regardless of which browser is used.

If anyone has any experience with this type of problem, any help or ideas to isolate the problem would be greatly appreciated!

Can someone just provide some general insight on how these controls are supposed to work and what they depend on? Maybe there is something I still need to install on the server to fully support all the functions? (Although the configuration test prior to installation showed no issues...)

Just re-installed C5, and that cleared up the issue. The only thing I did differently between the two installs was, instead of setting up C5 on a separate IIS7 web site, I installed it to a virtual folder of the Default web site. Don't know why that should make a difference, or even whether it really did, but just thought I'd leave these notes here for anyone else who might run into this problem.
