PHP Version 5.2.16 & '--disable-json'

Just put a dev install into production, clients own server. C5 works perfectly in every respect ** except ** there is no add page button when you are on the new page dialog box.
Symptoms are v.similar to this post:-

But I've got the a later version of PHP and C5 so above isn't the issue. However, it looks like json support hasn't been compiled in the PHP build so json_encode won't work as per post above.
I think clients server is a shared server, so can't recompile PHP or override in php.ini
Short of moving it, are there any "in C5" work arounds that might get it working?
Thanks in advance
