is it possible to actually take code from the system profile page and create a custom profile page which would feature the Messages, edit avatar, edit links? I would like to customize a profile page with the editor but it doesn't allow you to do it with system pages.
Also, is there any code I could use to have a default avatar display is none has been selected in the profile?

try copying the php files in concrete/single_pages/profile to /single_pages and then editing them there. not sure about the other though
I don't fully understand that. when you copy the php files to /singlepages how do you edit them? do you have to edit them in a separate editor or where?
Once you copy the files open it with notepad or text edit. you may find it helpful to use something like coda, it will be color coded and have extra helpful features
