Update to 5.4.1

Hi all
i need a=some help here as im new to this. im updating from 5.1.1 to 5.4.1. i have backed up my dbase and site, replaced the concrete directory with the recent version. when i go to mysite.com/index.php/tools/required/upgrade.php. im getting the option to install and not to upgrade. do i need to create a new database and then restore my backedUp one?
any help would be appreciated

I'm not 100% sure, but i think you have to go from 5.1 to 5.3 and then 5.4.

i tried that, problem is when i go to the update URL after replacing the concrete directory. i only have the option to install which require a new blank database and if i point it back to my existing database it returns an error saying i need a blank database
