updates, what is latest version & guides to instal

Hi
currently installed 5.4.1.1
Need help to update versions....
in dashboard it seems to indicate that there is a version 5.4.2.1 released 31/8/11, however I saw in Softaculous in cPanel there is an update 5.4.2.2 and it seems to offer at utility to do the install..is this safe to use..?

Have never done an update before, where can i find a guide...is it idiot proof as I'm not a techie.

Is it better to do the update process from within my sites C5 dashboard...?

If I do a backup 1st does this cover everything in case I need to revert...?

My hosts are changing to php 5.3 this month, is my existing C5 version 5.4.1.1 compatible with this and if I do upgrade to 5.4.2.X is this compatible..?

Thanks for help....

I'd trust the C5 native updater.

You'll just most likely have to make 2 updates to get to the current 5.4.2.2.

cPanel I don't know, they INSTALL your website, I wouldn't risk it overwriting anything. C5 native updater, for all my experience tells me, won't. And I did a handful of updates already, never had a problem.

I suppose cPanel is just to install the newest one, not to update, by the way.

I'm testing on a spare domain...
I've done backup...

then i tried running the update option and i got this error msg:

"The following errors occurred when attempting to process your request:

There was an error unpacking the file. Perhaps you have not uploaded a valid zip file, or you do not have zip installed."

where do i go from here..?

Since this wrote this, the tab for update now says I'm upto date but the dashboard (see attached) says i'm still on 5.4.1.1

Also it seems after my attempt to upload, i'm using aprx 50mb more space than before.....

very confused....

I have just built simple sites after installing 5.4.2.2 using Softaculous in my Arvixe hosting cPanel.
Can you tell me what you mean by Native Updater? I am anticipating C5 Version 5.5.
Thank you!
Eric
