Upgrade from 5.5.2.1 to ???

What is the best approach to upgrading a site from 5.5.2.1 to a more recent version? Which version should I go to? What are the risks? The existing site has some performance issues and I want to see if they have been corrected in more recent versions.....

If you decide to take intermediate steps, always go for the last point release of the intermediate step, so go straight to 5.6.0.2 and skip 5.6.0.
Point releases are always bug fixes, often including bug fixes in the upgrade routine, so trying to do an upgrade through stages before the last point release for that version is actually more likely to leave you stuck.
