Upgrade woes

Hoping there's a quick fix for this...
I had a site running 5.3.2 that for some reason the galleria and zoom blocks stopped working on. I hadn't really looked at the site for a long time. Customer wanted it fixed.
So, I figured this was a good time to update anyway, and that's what I proceeded to do, manually. Tried to go to 5.4.2.1, there were errors, so I put the old one back and went to 5.3.3 . It didn't go that smoothly, there were errors (something about adobd being deprecated), ran the upgrade script got other errors. Installed 5.3.3.1, again got weird errors, however the site is now working including the images galleries.
Problem is there's some stuff now missing from the dashboard; under the sitewide settings page, there is nothing. File manager no longer works.
When I try to upgrade to 5.4.2.1, I get this:
"An Unexpected Error occurred while upgrading: No block found with the handle autonav found."
Any ideas? Do I need to manually upgrade through each version? I think I've probably messed something up by the first attempt to go to 5.4.2.1, but not sure.
