upgrading from 5.3.3.1 to 5.4.1

Hi our site is hosted on another company and i need to upgrade the concrete 5 to 5.4.1
we are having issues as well with IE not being able to view the site.
As we are not server based and me being a know nothing, how do i upgrade and or fix this problem.
