upgrading from 5.4.2.2

hello all -

NOVICE here who is taking the reigns and self-educating - that said, i cannot seem to find the answer to two questions:

1. i need to upgrade from my current version to the latest - but first i need to run a backup - i get a 404 message. is this because the server my webmaster used cannot be found or is it something i am doing wrong? that said, can i upgrade without backing up? i don't have an incredibly complex site http://www.kristofermcneeley.com

2. i purchased the RSS feed add-on...and followed all the steps so that it should have appeared in my "add functionality" menu tab...but both before i downloaded the add on and after all i get when clicking through to that page is a big blank white page. no error message

help?!

thank you -

kristofer

This Howto on backups includes an explanation of why backups can fail.

If, after trying the various tricks of the howto you still have issues, or if you want an easy way to bakup files and data all in one go, there is Backup voodoo.

1A. To upgrade from 5.4.2.2 you need to proceed in steps:
http://www.concrete5.org/developers/downloads/...
(see Upgrading Note abouts 1/3 of the way down the page)

If you also have a development system with WAMP or similar installed, I recommend making a clone of your 5.4.2.2 site on that and using the clone to practice the series of upgrades before doing it on your live site.

Also, while upgrading, go into maintenance mode, switch off pretty URLs, clear and switch off the cache, clear all logs, and switch to a default theme. Then switch back again once done.

I don't know which RSS feed addon you are using, and whether you are reading or providing. But if it isn't yet active, uninstall it and then reinstall after you have upgraded.
