Upgrading local 5.5 to 5.6 errors

I have a site running an old old version of concrete5 5.5.2.1, and have pulled everything down locally to test upgrading to 5.6.3.2, when I try upgrading through the system admin I get this screen:
and my homepage then says this:
Fatal error: Call to a member function overrideCollectionPermissions() on boolean in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/brainsportz/updates/concrete5.6.3.2/concrete/core/models/permission/assignments/area.php on line 33
I have tried upgrading manually, dropping in 5.6.3.2 files and that does not work either, same errors, should I even bother upgrading?
I can get the site up and running on the 5.5.2.1 so trying to figure out the best option here.
