Upgrading to higher version

Curently running 5.6.0.1. Should I upgrade to latest or just go to the next version? Is there a special procedure?
I am using machighway for a server.I had a big problem when they upgraded their system.I was running 5.5.2.1 . My website became all mixed up and I finally closed it down.

you should be able to upgrade to 5.6.2.1 seamlessly!! Just update through your dashboard...

But always backup database and files before running an upgrade.
