Use external SMTP to email passwords?

I have Concrete5 running on a server at my school and, for security reasons, they don't allow their web servers to send email. I tried changing the php.ini file to use a gmail account, the concrete is still trying to use the server to send emails.

Is it possible to configure concrete5 to use a gmail account?

This would be a good thing to add to our mail helper. It'd be useful to be able to specify an alternate SMTP server, with authentication if necessary.

Unfortunately I'm locked out of the admin account for our site. Is there a way to manually reset the password in the database using the "salt" in the config files?
