Timeout Problem - Suggestions for Fix?

I have a site built with 5.6.3.3 (http://www.cmsguide.info ). Most of the traffic comes from Europe and other countries.
About half of all visitors in overseas countries are getting a "timeout" error.
What can be done to help fix this problem?

What kind of errors are they getting? Is there a pattern?
Particular pages / section of the website? Geographical location?
Is this just general timeouts or are you running an internationalisation plugin on the site and think it is due to that?
FWIW I'm in the UK and don't see anything majorly slow.
