Who's working on german translation for 5.5?

Hey,
I just got access to MyGengo and wanted to know who is also active at translating the new version? Would be nice if there would be some communication about the translation of major terms like "Stack" etc.
Would be nice if you leave a message here if you're about to join the translation process. I will also post this to concrete5-cms.de to let them know.
Cheers,
Matthias

I'm in :- ) though not yet registered at mygengo.
I have also just requested access to mygengo in order to help with German translations.
Nice. Let me know when you're accepted, so that we can start this project.
I have just been accepted and I have started translating a few strings (should all be in “pending review”).
I have a few questions, maybe you have an answer:
- The text to be translated doesn’t show in the white field, but only in the title above it and it is shortened when it is a bit longer. I could only see the full version when hovering on the title, which is a pain in the ass to work with. Is there a setting to change this?
- Is there a way to make “review pending” the default status for newly translated strings?
- Is there a place where the translation efforts are coordinated? Like a wiki page, where we decide on a few guidelines to get a consistent translation?
- Using the newest .po file, the links “Edit this Page” and “Add a Sub-Page” appear untranslated in Concrete5 and I haven’t found them in mygengo. Is there a way to translate them?

I didn't really figure this out too. in 5.4.2 the keys are there. I created a new thread:
http://www.concrete5.org/index.php?cID=283425...
- Is there a way to make “review pending” the default status for newly translated strings?
Don't know, maybe in personal settings?
- Is there a place where the translation efforts are coordinated? Like a wiki page, where we decide on a few guidelines to get a consistent translation?
http://concrete5-cms.de has done this in past but they site seems dead and no one accepted my registration in the forum. So we could start a little wiki for this. We could do it on ahttp://www.wikispaces.com/content/wiki-pricing... or do you know a better free solution maybe?
- Using the newest .po file, the links “Edit this Page” and “Add a Sub-Page” appear untranslated in Concrete5 and I haven’t found them in mygengo. Is there a way to translate them?
If you familiar with github you could do a pull request after you fixed that or you just submit this as a bug to the bugtracker of concrete5 and let the devs handle it (http://www.concrete5.org/developers/bugs/).

Matthias

It seems Translations are not important for the core team on the island so we are on our own...
I created my own German Translation Files for 5.5.1 which have to be placed into /languages/de_DE/LC_MESSAGES/
Some Strings have not yet been translated (mostly Installation stuff).
Here is the file (will be updated regularly):

Hey furehead!
What do you exactly mean with they don't care? It's an open source project. Or do I misunderstand you?
They accepted me and some other translators at the mygengo portal where you can help translate concrete5 if you want:
http://mygengo.com/string/p/concrete5-1/access/request...
Just give a short note about which language you want to translate.
Then you could add your translated strings to that.

Hi Programmieraffe,
that sounds good for you. They did not accept me (I never heard anything
although I tried several times). Maybe I was on the wrong Project (but I
think not). And I never got a translation from mygengo that worked or was
at least partly complete for the versions before.
But I hope it will work this time and there will be a 100% german version
soon.
Until then I will stick with my own translations as I did for the last
versions...
Good luck with translating,
Johannes

Johnannes, thanks a lot for your translation!
A few things about myGengo.
As far as I know, myGengo isn't managed by the core team, it's been started and managed by the community.
I think I've got the permission to grant access to myGengo for you as well. I just checked the history of requests and haven't seen anything from you. Can you please drop me a private message with your e-mail address so I can check if there's a pending request?
I'm not a big fan of myGengo, maybe because I'm too stupid. Here are my two problems:
* Because of thishttp://www.concrete5.org/index.php?cID=283425...
* In theory we can download the po files, translate it using poEdit and upload it afterwards. However, when I download the po-files, everything except one string is translated! Can anyone confirm this? I'd really like to finish the translation
Thanks!
Remo

Is it supposed to work like that? I can see no "Upload"-function at mygengo? If I open the po files I can see the translated strings, but not the untranslated ones.

It's possible that the upload function is only available because I'm an admin there. I tried to integrate the translations of Johannes but the only thing I get is a timeout...
Hi Remo,
thanks I finally got invited to the project in mygengo by somebody.
It would be great if you could upload my translated strings as a start and I totally agree mygengo is not the perfect tool.
It might be a good starting point if translation files including .pot files would become part of an official concrete5 github repository (maybe the main concrete5 project? currently the language folders are empty...)
Then we could work with them like with code files and we would not have to use so many different tools (forums/mygengo/other-regional-webpages).
Best regards,
Johannes

I like the repository idea! Maybe the core team likes this idea too.
Right now we could start with a public git/hg-repository on our own to test this workflow? First step would be to merge the two files from mygengo and the version of furehead I think.

Today I completed and corrected my German language files for Concrete5 5.5.1 - nearly every string is translated now (if translatable).
You can Download the German Translation (updated March 14th 2012) using this link again:

Everybody is welcome to comment and make suggestions for better german translations.

I'm just a bit worried that we have users working my myGengo and some working with github. We should find a way to let people know where the (German) translation can be found.
Does anyone know, can we add a message on myGengo or make it readonly?

Thanks for your efforts!
However, as Remo stated already, I find it necessary to have a single system that is used for (at least) the German translation in order to have a sustainable system that doesn’t rely on single persons and where there’s no duplication of effort.
I see different possibilities:
- Use myGengo: The problem is that at the moment, it is unusable for longer strings (due to the problem stated above) and there doesn’t seem to be a possibility to download the .po files and translate them yourself. The advantage of myGengo is, that it’s the place where the rest of the c5-translations happen, so it’s the ‘official’ place.
- Use github: I don’t know if this is too technical for some translators but this might work.
- Use another system like Launchpad: Yet another place where you would need an account etc. but it might be good to work with and it has a web interface plus the possibility to translate .po files with existing software.
I think it would be wise to decide for one approach and coordinate the efforts afterwards.
Other ideas worth thinking about:
- It would probably be a good idea to have some kind of wiki site where we could make a few guidelines for the translations, e.g. how to translate certain terms.
- Wouldn’t it be great to have the translations as an addon? That way they could be easily installed and we could provide updates.

I did recommend transifex.net over myGengo and hoped that C5 devs would, at least, put, English *.pot for 5.5.1.
Now, having need to translate C5 into Croatia, I'll just create project @transifex and/or use poedit and do it offline.
However, it would be nice that I18N becomes more organized, 'cause it really sucks atm. :-(
Sincerely,
Gour

As this concerns more than just the German translators, I wonder if it would be best to create a bug report in order to find a viable solutions with the developers. I’d suggest the following steps in order to make c5 translations rock:
- Use a translation system that works, i.e. where you can translate online or download the translation files and use your favourite translation program. Suggestions include transifex.net and launchpad.net
- Have a wiki page where translators can coordinate their efforts.
- Create an addon per language, so you can easily install and update language files.
- Have some kind of string freeze in the release process, so users have a translated system right away, rather than have the translation files pop up some time after the release, as it seems to be the case at the moment.
What do you think about it? Do you have other things you deem important for a more functional multi-language strategy? Do you have other translation systems you would like to suggest? Do you think a bug report is the right way to do this?

With Mainio (author of Language Manager) I had discussion in the past to enhance his add-on write a new one which would enable one to translate core and add-ons from within C5 installation itself.
I understand that C5 asks $1.7K from entreprise users to help 'em manage CONTENT, but I believe that helping developers/translators tp translate C5 core and add-ons should be for free...Just a thought...
> Do you think a bug report is the right way to do this?
Maybe it's better than sending private messages which I did to Frz & Andrew (Nov & Dec '11) but got no reply when asking waht's the best way to submit translations.
Sincerely,
Gour

I didn’t know about Language Manager, it seems like it handles the part about installing languages from the dashboard and updating them. However, I think this should be available as core functionality (or at least for free), especially since the translation work itself is done by volunteers (afaik) and it doesn’t seem to be too complex to do. Well, anyway, I think it is basic functionality for a CMS to support other languages, so there should be an easy way to install and update language files.
I think I’ll wait a bit longer for more input/suggestions and then post a bug report. If we get enough people to voice their support (and I imagine the current situation is frustrating for others as well) we should probably find a more satisfying solution.

Hi!
I noticed our account name here, so it's more than appropriate to send in a comment.
Yes, @gour has talked about adding a translator tool in the language manager and we might be doing that at some point. However, the core team is also planning on some translations-related stuff on their roadmap so I wouldn't want to be doing any duplicate work with them as they seem to be quite silent about their moves in advance. It's just waste of time for us if we find out week later after rolling out an update that the core team has also implemented it.
Currently the language manager serves the language translation files from our own repository that we're automatically updating from myGengo. This is quite a full-scale language repository of our own (that we OURSELVES have built and that we OURSELVES keep up-to-date) and I don't see that $30 for using that repository FOREVER is quite much of a cost. Usually you buy service as such with monthly price.
Also, installing languages is not that hard for developers by putting them into the languages-folder but we feel that automatic installation of the languages might be quite important for some more novice-level users. We offer additional functionality that helps people with this stuff, just for your own comfortability.
I'd also like to hear more about the core team plans on where they're heading with this as it might open up the discussion even further.
Best regards,
Antti / Mainio
P.P.S. The Finnish translation team together with others doesn't seem to like the myGengo either. I also know that the core team has pointed out that it's not the best possible solution in the long term.

So, I've to start translating (core & some add-ons) in order to launch my site(s) asap...what do you suggest? To download *.po file from mygengo and do it offline with poedit and put it online (e.g. bitbucket), create transifex project or something else?
Waiting is not an option any longer...

Gour

If you need to add some stuff to the translation, I'd suggest downloading that and making the changes. However, you should note that different languages in myGengo currently might not have 100% of the translation strings. Or at least that was the case with the Finnish translation for a while (myGengo said ~100% although some translatable strings were missing).
If you only need to translate some site-specific texts or add-ons, I'd suggest to do it locally for your own site currently. I don't think that there is even any guidelines about add-on translations currently, other than including them in the downloadable add-on package.
Something I know about the core team plans (or at least they have said so at some point) is to make it all centralized, so core & add-on translations would be in one place and they would also have a shared string storage which would make the job a bit easier for translators.
I think that with Language Manager we're not going that far at any point but a local translation file editing might not be out-of-boundaries for us if the core team is not already implementing that.

Heh, Croatian is translated 0%. :-)

We have, if we want to keep C5, adjust to live with it. ;)

Yeah, that might be feasible since we mostly need to translate front-end stuff...

That would be cool and really make it smoother for translation work, but seeing that the github repo does not even have 551.po...

That's nice. I'm seriously considering buying one copy (for the beginning) of Language Manager although we're quite short at the moment when the 'company' is spending more than earning. :-/

Hi Gour,
you can take the .po for .551 from the german version posted above if you need a more or less complete base for your croation translation.
The missing strings in mygengo are the main problem I see with that platform (in addition to performance issues during download/upload/import/export of po files).
Greetings,
Johannes

You could try an online tool to help you with your translation, it'shttp://poeditor.com/. It uploads po, pot and other files, depending on your needs and brings your terms to an organized work space where you can have people translate for you or use an automatic translation function.
