To me the site speed is not that bad.

I tried it this afternoon when the problem was first posted and it sometimes took 20-30 seconds to render completely. If this were my corporate site, I would not be pleased with the speed.
Try disabling the basic and full page cache. Sounds weird, but it worked for me.

I cleared the cache and indexed the several year old site which had never been done before.
