I need urgent help with our existing site to implement member registration and simpler social network functionality. Looking for a quick fix now, but also for a long term consultant, we'll have a steady stream of work coming.

You should check out the concrete wall (http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/concrete-wall-by-lerteco-developer-preview/). Depending on what you mean by "social network functionality", it might get you a lot of the way there.
I've just finished a new version, and otherwise thought a lot about how c5 can become "social".
