Need help with C5 with PHP

Permalink
EdisonReport.net has been using C5 for about 5 years, but we did not migrate to the newest version. Over the last week, our site has slowed significantly. Bluehost says it is a C5 problem, something to do with PHP's not closing. Need someone who can fix this.

Thanks, Randy Reid

That seems like a really odd thing for bluehost to say. You are running 5.6.0.2 which, while it may not have the most recent performance improvements, isn't that old and certainly not that unstable. Upgrading probably wouldn't hurt but for as slow as your site is loading I suspect you have an add-on somewhere that's slowing it down, or bluehost's servers are just taxed.

If you need help feel free to shoot me a PM and we can work something out.

I would suspect Bluehost. You are not alone: http://www.hostjury.com/reviews/Bluehost...

In almost all cases of a slow website, it's an overloaded shared server. You can spend days combing through code and improve it 10% but you will never overcome a slow server.

Agreed. You'll get the same story with Justhost and GoDaddy to in my experience. I've heard hit and miss about hostgator.

I have many websites on SiteGround and I'm very happy with them and others seem to agree:

Hostgator has the most overloaded database servers in the world. Forget db backups via concrete5 when your site is 6 months old

I have a boatload of sites on Hostgator, I have found them to be one of the better shared hosting services. DB failure is usually the page statistics table has gotten huge and php times out, that will happen everywhere.

I've just started using digital Ocean, talk about screaming fast sites for $10 a month, it's awesome but you have to know how to set up a server.

Yes... It's due to the statistics table, but we are not talking about a huge data set.

And yes... Digital Ocean rocks. I have a $5/month Ubuntu VPS and it's awesome

OK, is it possible to truncate this table? I have to do something quick to get my site back up.

I believe you can just turn off the statistics at Dashboard->System and Settings->Statistics and that clears the table.

Thanks I tried to turn off statistics, but it was already turned off. I am in a world of hurt. Nothing seems to make it go faster. Also cleared the cache and then turned cache on. Still no help.

Why not turn off statistics altogether? Google analtyics provides much better incite anyway.

In the short run you can take a backup of your database, then run the following SQL command:

TRUNCATE `PageStatistics`;
OPTIMIZE TABLE `PageStatistics`;

the blue host guy suggested turning off cloud flare. But I pay for cloud flare because it is supposed to speed up the site. He also says the site might be down for a few hours once I turn off cloud flare. Does anyone think clouldflare could be my problem?

Cloudflare always causes me problems. I turn it off all the time.

Cloudflare just acts as a CDN for static files such as images, css and javascripts. Turning that service off shouldn't make your site go offline.

I think it's time to find a new host.

But a CMS like concrete5 is always changing these 'static' assets and I find the caching provided by services such as CloudFlare make building and managing the site really frustrating so I turn it off. I never really saw any increase in speed with it on.
