Pictures disappeared and permissions removed

Overnight many of the images that were on our website have disappeared, replaced with a message saying image not found.

The images are still on the file manager, however any image I try and 'choose' still comes up as image not found on the web page. Also when I try to upload a new image on to the file manager it comes up with the following message:

"Upload Error

Unable to copy file to storage directory. Please check permissions on your upload directory and ensure they can be written to by your web server."

In the dashboard it will not let me access any permissions screens.

This is very strange as I used to be able to use all of those functions. I haven't updated concrete5 (currently running on version 5.6.0.2) so this seems to have happened without any prompting from our end.

Does anyone have a solution for this, as about 4 weeks ago it was all working fine!

the permissions the error message is refering to are not to be set from the dashboard. There should be set directly on your server.

They are permissions needed for Concrete5 to be able to write to your server (upload files for example)
