Upgrade to Concrete 5.7

My site is currently running 5.5/6. I have uploaded the 5.7 files but am a bit hesitant to go any further. There are a few add ons in the older version that I really do not want to lose. I am comfortable rebuilding the site after the new files are up and running being that the older one doesn't have much.

I think the right approach here would be to simply build a new site in 5.7
and copy content over as desired. Add-ons and themes that worked with 5.6
will not by default work for 5.7:

Thank you for all your help. I really want to stick with Concrete5 but not having sufficient technical skills I get extremely nervous with all the upgrades, rebuilding and converting. If I rebuild and say three months down the road 5.7 has to be rebuilt because of 5.8 I will be an unhappy camper.
I'm thinking about jumping ship to go with wordpress to avoid so much sorry but with the right help I'll keep concrete5. Any suggestions?

Well, this is the first time in 7-8 years I think that Concrete5 has had a release with no upgrade path. With the changes in technology since they started, that's a pretty good run. You also received a response from the head of Concrete5 within an hour of your post (frz's post above). You'll likely not see that kind of attention on any other platform.
As mentioned, your site on 5.6 should be able to see a fairly long life without rebuilding, but if you do go to 5.7, I would expect you'll see many years of reliable updates. There's always lot of help here on the forums for when issues arise, and lots of talented people around to get quotes from when you have work that you're not comfortable with.

You are correct in all that you say. I have used Concrete since 2009 and while there has been help from the community some of my woes have been through trial and error. This time I don't want to go that route which is why I am asking for the gurus and geeks to help me make this transition.

Can you list the existing add-ons and functionality you need to have in the new site? There's a lot of add-ons not yet ported to 5.7, so knowing what gaps there are will help everyone put together some quotes. Also, a budget range would be good to help people provide the right range of service for you.

+1 on what MyTooq said - if you could list the add-ons you can't live without, then someone will probably be able to help.

John: why not now? 5.7 has a much more modern user experience, the layouts and theme customization are way better. If this fellow has a simple content site and wants to have it running in 5.7 why not simply build a new site and cut and paste the content over?

I think there is an argument for how improved the user experience is. If he's not doing a design overhaul of his site it might not be worth the effort or cost (if he can't do it himself) right now.
Why now?
5.6.x still works and is maintained.
While there won't be a complete upgrade, chances are there will be some content migration tools coming along based on export/import and XML. Why not just keep running the existing site, wait another 6 months, and see what comes up?

Why now? Because we really need to add more content to the site including online courses. We don't want to have to rebuild once the content begins. We could wait another six months and hope that a fix is made but that's six months worth of content lost. Right now the site doesn't have a lot of content which would make it easier to transfer to the upgrade now versus later.
After reading all the comments about 5.7 (the good, bad, and ugly) it sounds like we need to keep what we have until the "kinks" are worked out. However, like the old quote says, "If it's not broke don't fix it." Keep 5.6 indefinitely until 5.7 has the add ons, plug ins, etc. Promoting an upgrade that's not ready sounds like a nail in the ol' coffin, if you ask me. I like concrete5 so I want to see what comes out of this.
Before you take anyones opinion, you could actually download a copy onto your server and play with it yourself. Personally, as of the most recent version (7.3.1), it's pretty stable. I believe 7.4 is coming out shortly which fixes almost everything I've had a problem with.

I'm a bit hesitant to upload anything on the shared host server as it eats up my space and slows down the site. Also, I didn't see any addons for wordpress for concrete5. This addon is a must keep.

Just to ensure you're aware, there is no direct upgrade from 5.6.x to 5.7.x and so you'll be looking at a rebuild if you want to move to 5.7. There isn't a major rush to move as your 5.6 site will continue to work, you just won't see any updates from Concrete5 after a while (there's still ~6 months of support planned as far as I know).
If you want to rebuild, you might want to list out some of the key add-ons in 5.6 that are not currently in 5.7 and folks here can get in touch to provide quotes.
