file manager - unable to download images or sets

I wanted to back up some images I have in sets. these images were uploaded at various times and are therefore in all sorts of folders and sub folders (as is the c5 way), I have selected a set of images and then I "select all", the from dropdown, I choose "download", but nothing happens at all. I have tried in IE and Ff and chrome. nothing happens. No zip file or anything appears.
I have not used the download facility ever before so don't know what to expect.
any clues please ?
