Page background colour

Hi, like many I'm fairly new to C5. Its outstanding and I have a site. I have been trying to change the background colour of my pages. I began with the Green Salad Theme and have modified it a bit already.
I have now uploaded a changed version of this theme to /themes folder (Green salad theme is in the \concrete\themes\ folder and changed this so it become my default theme. Despite changing the page background colour to a pale green #E8F789, it still shows up as a white background.
Interestingly, when I tried to use the dashboard (themes management section) to change the page background colour in any theme I have loaded, it always reverts to white.
In my slightly personalised theme, I have amended the main.css file line 3 to change the background colour, but it simply doesn't change.
I must be doing something wrong, but no idea what. Maybe some files on the server are not writebale that should be?? I am not a coder really, so be gentle with me!

Which main.css file are you changing? Did you change the name of your new theme, cause you might want to make sure that you have the right theme activated.
Thanks for the reply. I mis-led you a little, its the default theme I am trying to change, not the Green Salad one. Got mixed up.
What I did was copied the default theme,renamed it to a new name, then pasted it into the root/themes folder after having made my changes (I amended main.css in the new theme).
I have since, after hours of mucking about, figured out that if I want to amend the default theme, its going to mean making changes in the core elements as irrespective of any changes I make to my new theme, as its based on the default theme, the system always reverts to its core programming for a number of the base elements.
I have tried other themes with no problem, but its the default theme I want to change. I have figured out how now after quite a few hours of trial and error

I know it's been a while but, would you tell me how you changed your Plain Yogurt theme? I'm having the same problem. Oh, and please keep it simple for me. Thanks.
